Santa Cruz, CA - New York, NY: 4175 Mi.

Give or take a few. I rode into Manhattan this morning over the George Washington Bridge and rode down the bike path on the west side to Battery Park. After lunch I will ride back into Brooklyn over the Williamsburg bridge.

Brooklyn Rainstorm

Yesterday we went to the beach and I saw the Atlantic Ocean for the first time on the trip and even went swimming. Today we were out in Brooklyn and got caught in multiple rain/lightning showers. In this picture Alan and Zoe take a picture of a door that someone had tagged 'world's best dad' on as the storm brews over Manhattan in the background.

NYC

After a two day delay due to getting a little sick I took the train into Manhattan this morning, I'll probably ride my bike in sometime next week, the weather this morning looked a little rainy but it's clear in the city.

New Jersey

I left Philadelphia this morning after a brief visit with my grandpa's brother Father John. After a long ride I made it to Maplewood, NJ which is just west of Newark. I will probably ride into NYC tomorrow or the next day but with an unloaded bike. This picture is of the Delaware River in Washington Crossing, PA/NJ.

Philadelphia

I made it to Philadelphia after a short ride from Delaware. Along the way I passed through Wilmington and a few small Pennsylvania towns. It feels good to finally be north of the Mason-Dixon line. Philadelphia seems to be a pretty bike friendly city so far and biking around town I was going faster than the cars.

Welcome To Delaware

I am in Delaware but only for a few more hours, it is only about 40 miles from here to Philadelphia so I should get there pretty early. I found bike routes from here into Northern New Jersey so I shouldn't have much trouble the next two days unless I get lost!

Baltimore

I am in Baltimore tonight, it was a pretty easy ride here from Arlington through the national mall again and then into Maryland. I rode on some bike trails along the way including one which went along side BWI airport. In Baltimore I passed an anime convention and a huge festival downtown.

Pictures in Washington

Tomorrow I leave the Washington area bound for Baltimore!

To start out with the more boring pictures:

The Lincoln Memorial.

The Washington Monument.

The Capitol Building.

The Supreme Court

Ford's Theater.

Nathan in front of the American Art Musem and National Portrait Gallery.

Darcy and Obama.

Close up of Obama poster, there is a lot of detail in the real thing that isn't in the reproductions!

Ascending the metro escalator #1.

Ascending the metro escalator #2.

Stationary bikes.

Nathan poses for a photo in front of the Belarusian embassy, on the right hand edge Darcy takes a picture.

Inside the East Building of the National Gallery of Art, in the foreground Alexander Calder mobile.

Darcy stands between the WWII Memorial and the reflecting pool, in the background the Lincoln Memorial.

Nathan sits at the WWII Memorial.

The Constitution

The constitution is much less faded than the almost illegible because they are so faded bill of rights and declaration of independence.

Waiting in line

They only let a certain amount of people into the nomination hearing at a time. They distribute tickets in the morning and there is a line. They could start a closed session today so my best bet to get in is waiting in line this morning which gives of a chance to eat my lunch as they don't allow any food in to the hearing room.

Goochland, VA

I am the library in Goochland, VA which is a little bit NW of Richmond. Tonight I will stay somewhere between here and Washington D.C. and will arrive in Arlington tomorrow. It hasn't been too hot becuase it has been cloudy for most of every day which is nice. It always seems like it might rain but so far it only rained once two days ago. I took this picture right after it rained, what looks like a white cloud against the blue sky is actually a white cloud against a much darker rain cloud.

Virginia

I an in Lunenburg, VA and I might be the only person in Lunenburg, VA, it's hard to tell. This is a statue of a confederate soldier in front of the county courthouse. Soon I will intersect with US Bike Route 1 which stop along the Atlantic coast <but seperate from the adventure cycling route> but it is only signed in some states, I'm not sure if Virginia is one of them.

Fourth of July all over the world!

I am in Chapel Hill after riding through Asheboro, NC and Liberty, NC this morning and afternoon. Along the way I met two groups of cyclists and I got some good directions and was able to take nice roads that weren't on my map. I will stay here for a few days and get cleaned up and rested before continuing on through Virginia to Washington D.C.

North Carolina

Tonight I am camping on the edge of the Uwharie National Forest near the town of Abner, NC. It was slow going all day today because of a strong head wind and rolling hills. From here I head East again to get to Chapel Hill.

More river camping

In diverting from any post of established bike route I have to do a lot of guessing about what roads are going to be safe and nice to ride on. Also there are lots of roads in South Carolina that on my map have state highway numbers but in the real world aren't signed with or called by those numbers. This leads to a lot of wandering around hoping that I am on the right road but lots of times I get somewhere which is five miles from where I thought I was going. Other than getting lost a few times today I went through Florence, SC and now I am camping by the river near Society Hill, SC. From here the route to Chapel Hill seems pretty straightforward unless I run into more phantom roads. When I am making up my route as I go along it is especially nice to see these 'bike route' signs as they let me know that I have made a somewhat good choice. Today at the library in Society Hill I met Joan, Kevin and Angel who were all very nice. Kevin said that he helped establish these routes!

Lane, SC

Tonight I am in Lane, SC on a detour from the Atlantic Coast route to visit a friend in Chapel Hill, NC. Originally I thought that I would try to race there by the Fourth of July which would be 300 miles in three days but it works out better for me to get there on Saturday or Sunday so instead I'll take it easier the next 3 or 4 days after riding 100 miles today. My campsite today is behind the volunteer fire department in Lane which is a nice spot except for that a little bit further behind the fire station are the train tracks, hopefully they don't run too late. This picture is of two chimneys that looked like they were growing out of a maze of vines, probably a house that burned down.
